In Yoruba mythology, and related African-American cults such as Candomblé and Vodun, Yemaja is the mother of all Orisha. Depending on tradition, she is also referred to as Imanja, Jemanja, Yemalla, Yemana, Yemanja, Yemaya, Yemayah, Yemoja, Ymoja and in other variations. She is the queen of the sea; she is invoked for protection (especially of pregnant women), purification and help in general, asking for her manifestation in her most maternal aspect of her; another aspect of Yemaja, the destructive one, is symbolized by the stormy sea.
Tradition has it that Yemaja was born from the foam of the sea (like Venus); her figure can be made to correspond to the general one of the "Great Mother", typical of numerous traditions.
She taught love to all Orishas, she is married to Babalú Ayé. Among the characteristics of her that distinguish her are the passion for hunting, cunning, indomitability, anger, severity, cheerfulness. The colors white and blue and Saturday are associated with her; in syncretisms she is identified with the Virgin of the Rule. Her faithful, before pronouncing her name, must touch the dust of the earth with their fingertips.
Among her attributes are the moon and the sun, the anchor, the life jacket, the lifeboats. She habitually wears a long blue robe with serpentines symbolizing the sea and the foam and she holds a fan adorned with shells.[1]
She is the mother goddess and patroness of women, especially pregnant women, she is also the patroness of the Ogun River, whose waters are said to cure infertility. Her parents are Odùduwà and Obatala. Her son Orungan raped her once and tried again; to prevent this violence, Yemaja burst fifteen Orishas from her own belly, including Ogun, Olokun, Shopona and Shango.
Among the Umbandists, Yemaja is the goddess of the ocean and patron goddess of shipwreck survivors.

Nella mitologia yoruba, e nei culti correlati afroamericani come il Candomblé e il Vodun, Yemaja è la madre di tutti gli Orisha. A seconda della tradizione, viene indicata anche come Imanja, Jemanja, Yemalla, Yemana, Yemanja, Yemaya, Yemayah, Yemoja, Ymoja e in altre varianti. È la regina del mare; si invoca per protezione (in particolar modo delle donne incinte), purificazione e aiuto in generale, chiedendone la manifestazione nel suo aspetto più materno; un altro aspetto di Yemaja, quello distruttore, è simboleggiato dal mare in tempesta.
La tradizione narra che Yemaja sia nata dalla spuma del mare (come Venere); la sua figura si può far corrispondere a quella generale della "Grande Madre", propria di numerose tradizioni.
Ha insegnato l'amore a tutti gli Orisha, è sposata con Babalú Ayé. Tra le caratteristiche che la contraddistinguono vi sono la passione per la caccia, l'astuzia, l'indomabilità, la collera, la severità, l'allegria. Le sono associati i colori bianco e blu e il sabato; nei sincretismi viene identificata con la Vergine della Regola. I suoi fedeli, prima di pronunciare il suo nome, devono toccare con i polpastrelli la polvere della terra.
Tra i suoi attributi vi sono la luna e il sole, l'àncora, il salvagente, le scialuppe. Veste abitualmente con una lunga veste azzurra con serpentine simboleggianti il mare e la spuma e regge un ventaglio adornato con conchiglie.[1]
Dea madre e patrona delle donne, specialmente di quelle in gravidanza, è patrona anche del fiume Ogun, le cui acque si dice che riescano a curare l'infertilità. I suoi genitori sono Odùduwà e Obatala. Suo figlio Orungan la violentò una volta e ci riprovò una seconda; per impedire questa violenza, Yemaja esplose dal proprio ventre quindici Orisha, inclusi Ogun, Olokun, Shopona e Shango.
Tra gli Umbandisti, Yemaja è la dea dell'Oceano e dea patrona dei sopravvissuti ai naufragi.
