Il tortarello abruzzese
Appartiene alla famiglia delle Cucurbitacee ed è una varietà di melone non dolce, conosciuta fin dall’antichità e nota sia nel bacino del Mediterraneo, che in Asia Minore, Armenia e India.
Con grande probabilità, si tratta del primo melone addomesticato, del quale, cioè, è stata introdotta la coltivazione.
Il tortarello ha una forma allungata più o meno contorta, a seconda delle condizioni colturali: se cresce liberamente, come avviene nel caso di piante rampicanti, in cui il frutto si sviluppa verticalmente, appeso, resta dritto.
Il tortarello è di colore verde scuro o verde chiaro, ha dei solchi in superficie, che è leggermente cerosa e liscia; per via del suo aspetto, è noto anche come “melone serpente”.
Il frutto a piena maturazione può raggiungere i 90 cm di lunghezza e un diametro di 20 cm, nella parte centrale, più ingrossata
